What do you want to be when you grow up?

Do you remember what you thought your future would look like as a kid? I knew exactly who I wanted to be when I grew up.  I had an image of a woman in my mind. She was a lot like my Mom and mixed with images I probably pulled from the media. I was reminded of her when I spent the night in my childhood room this weekend.

If you've ever had the opportunity to go back to your old room, you'd know what a familiar and strange experience it is. Familiar because you go right back to the way you felt when you left it. I'm fortunate to feel a sense of calm in my room. The pictures on the wall are the same and even the jewelry and knick-knacks on the dresser belong to me. The strange part is realizing how long you've been gone and how much life has changed since you left. This weekend, I shared my room with my husband and our two little boys.  Boys in my room! That would not have happened in the 90s!

As I stared up at the ceiling, I thought of all the things I had imagined about my grownup self. You know how a kid will tell you that they will be a scuba diving princess firefighter? Well, I wasn't much different. When I grew up, I was going to live in a city with an important job in a hospital. At some point, I even knew which hospital. I wasn't going to live in the city forever because everyone was too close together. I'd move to the Barbie dream house of my dream with my Ken. I spent time scrolling through Jet magazine deciding which hairstyles I would have and I love looking at the society pages in RI Monthly deciding what was the best reason to be photoed in that feature. Want to know the crazy thing about those dreams? Aside from the RI Monthly feature, everything came true.  I worked in the very hospital I had imagined with a job that gave me a  90s style beeper to pair nicely with my iPhone and meetings (thanks Mom for that imagery). I lived in a fabulous apartment in the city and later moved to a cute house in the burbs with my "Ken".  The hairstyles? I had em! And girl, they were all fabulous! I'm loving my current 'do and realized it was already in the line up from way back when. I haven't been in the society pages but I was featured in a major brand's photo shoot and that's pretty much the same thing (don't tell me otherwise!)

All this to say that the way we look at ourselves can be a self- fulfilling prophecy. The image that you create for yourself is powerful. So powerful that we don't even realize that it can be the driving force behind the decisions that we make. It is important to hold onto the positive child view of yourself. It's so easy to get bogged down by the daily grind that we forget to hold on to what we really want. You tell yourself how you want to be seen and the world just follows suit. The mind is pretty powerful.

I want my image to say that I am a powerful, independent woman that knows how to have fun. What do you want your image to say about you?
