The DEI Ripple Effect: Small Actions Leading to Big Change
As the year comes to a close, it’s natural to reflect on what we’ve accomplished and how we’ve grown—not only as individuals but also as coaches. In the world of coaching, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are essential to creating safe and transformative spaces for our clients. While large initiatives and systemic changes often grab the headlines, we should not discount the smaller, consistent actions we take as coaches that create the ripple effect necessary for lasting change.
Think about a pebble dropped into a pond. That initial splash—the single action—sets off concentric waves that travel outward. In the same way, every mindful choice we make in our coaching practice contributes to a more equitable and inclusive profession and community.
As coaches, these small actions might include:
Holding space for clients with diverse lived experiences and perspectives, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and valued.
Adopting a lens of cultural humility by recognizing and honoring differences in identity, culture, and worldview without judgment.
Challenging your own assumptions and biases to remain present and curious in your coaching conversations.
Incorporating inclusive practices into your coaching agreements and conversations, such as inviting pronouns or creating accessibility for clients of all abilities.
Expanding your own learning through DEI-focused resources, training, and discussions to deepen your understanding of systemic inequities.
These actions may seem modest in the moment, but their cumulative impact can be profound. They ripple outward—into your clients’ lives, your coaching community, and the organizations and systems you support.
As we look ahead to the new year, consider setting DEI-focused intentions in your coaching practice. Perhaps it’s committing to exploring intersectionality in client experiences, advocating for inclusion within ICF or our local chapter, or engaging with communities that broaden your understanding of underrepresented voices in the coaching profession.
DEI work as a coach isn’t just about big, headline-making changes—it’s about the everyday ripples we create through our words, actions, and decisions. Together, these ripples build the momentum that leads to waves of transformation in our clients and the world around us.
So, as you take stock of 2024 and look toward 2025, ask yourself: What ripples have I created this year as a coach? And what waves do I want to set in motion next?
